How much will it cost to renovate my kitchen?

How much is it going to cost to renovate the kitchen? The answer is, well… it depends. Exactly what are you looking for? What are your reasons for the renovation? It can be a very wide range. You can expect to spend at least $30,000 without appliances for a basic kitchen renovation. That number can double, triple or more as we’ve done very high-end kitchens with high-end appliances for $250,000. The cost of a kitchen remodel can vary quite a bit depending on many factors.

The heart of the house?

It may be a cliche and cute; but saying that the kitchen is the “heart of the house” is more accurate today than it has ever been. The kitchen has always been our source of food for the family, so when homes were built in the late 1940’s and 1950’s, they were designed in a much more simple manner. Mom cooked and then brought the food to the dining room. But as our lives changed, more and more started happening in the kitchen. The 1970’s saw more activity start to happen in the kitchen. Inexpensive clothing washers and dryers appeared and now it was a laundry room too.

But by the 1980’s, Dads were becoming home chefs too and kids were hanging around working on homework (as well as the dreaded “school projects”). More importantly, when we entertained, the person cooking (be it Mom, Dad, or a teen) wanted to be part of the group. Those groups started hanging out in the kitchen.

Today, the kitchen has become far more than originally intended. We want our kitchens to be able to accommodate multiple home chefs. We also want space for other work to be done: so many people are working from home that they need to be able to multi-task. We want a place where we can attend that Zoom meeting while preparing a meal. And when the guests arrive, we want them right next to us.

How Big?

If you are lucky enough to have a large kitchen, you can easily incorporate multiple workspaces (for cooking), as well as “office” areas, and a spot for guests to hang out. A major kitchen renovation will cost anywhere from $40,000 to $75,00. A renovation in Hawaii, New York, or Los Angeles will obviously be more expensive than in the mid-west.

Quality:

You can certainly save money on the quality of materials. You can find decent appliances at major chain stores. But you can also splurge on “luxury” items. The same goes for countertops, cabinets, and floors. If you are looking for the best, your renovation cost can go up to $125,000 (and more).

What is Important?

The most important factor is determining what is important to you. Do you want a top of the line oven? Or can you get by with something more inexpensive? Do you want countertops that will dazzle your guests? Or are you looking for practicality?

Other Considerations:

You always need to consider “the why.” Why are you upgrading your kitchen? Is it because you plan to be in the house for 20 more years and want something that will satisfy all your needs (and your future needs)? This is the time to design that kitchen that reflects the personality of your family. Figure out exactly what you are looking for and create the room you long for. If you plan to remain for an extended period of time, it is probably time to call for a quote.

What if you are looking a kitchen remodel in Rhode Island because you are selling the house? If you are planning on selling, check with realtors and see what buyers in your area are looking for. You do not want to create a kitchen that does not match what the houses in the area are selling for. You want good, quality materials. You probably don’t want the oversized appliances with features many people will never use. You need to create a kitchen that is going to meet the needs of the people who buy in your area. Neighborhoods that attract families require one type of kitchen. Neighborhoods that attract bachelors require another altogether.

Your Choice:

The key to remodeling your kitchen is planning. Think about the reasons that you are doing the renovation. Are you creating your dream kitchen? Are you creating something that simply needs to be more functional for your family? Are you finally getting rid of peeling Formica so you can sell the house? Apply those reasons to your planning and speak with your contractor.
